Question

Hello,

I and trying (yes it is very trying) to install Linux on a pentium 75 and am having no luck. Everytime I place a boot disk in and attempt to boot from it the following error is given:

hda: ERROR, PORTS ALREADY IN USE.

and I cannot access the drive to partition it or fromat it.

If I place two drives on the primary controller I get the same error for hdb.

I have tried using MSD to check for conflicts, and I cannot see any. I have removed the network card, and the error remains.

The secondary controller seems to be unaffected by this prolem and thus hdc in recognised.

I have even moved the video card from one socket to another and it has no effect.

I have gotten them all (3) to work under DOS, to the point that I can partition them and fromat them.

I have consulted "Linux Unleashed" which rather unhelpfully tells me to try a different kernel. But fails to tell me how to get this different kernel or how to create it.

I have have tried Mandrake 6.1, Red Hat 5.3 and 6.2, and Slackware 4.0. And the same message appears. Could someone please help as I don't know what to do next.

Keven.

It's a DMA/IO thing I guess. If you've got a "PnP OS" setting in your BIOS, disable it and let Linux try & figure out what resources to delegate to which device.

Next separate the drives, put one on master ide0 and one on master ide1, and if you've got a cdr put it on slave ide1.

HTH.

Thank You for the reply. However, it didn't seem to work. I set the BIOS to "ISA/EISA" (the only other setting besides "PCI/PnP") and neither the BIOS or Slackware could find the primary controller with slackware returning the error. I returned to the original setting and the BIOS still can't find the primary controller. The last time this happened I had to move the Video card to a new slot before it would return the primary controller. I beginning to think that the video card has something to do with the problem. Any suggestions. I had already tried the second suggestion. It does matter if their is only one drive on the primary controller (or in the computer for that matter the error is returned. The only time it is not is if there is nothing connected to the primary controller.

Thank you again.

Keven.

"Ports already in use" means the resource address(es) from one resource are mixed up with the resource address(es) of another one. I would try setting the most conservative options in the BIOS if available, and try booting without the most necessary cards, like leave the ethernet card out for instance.
Could it be the controller is faulty? What happens if you put one HD on ide0 and the other on ide1, go into the BIOS and do an autodetect on both HD's? Are they correctly recognized? And if you swap em around? (DON'T SAVE the results when exiting the BIOS).
Have you tried booting with one HD or both HD's on the secondary IDE slot?
With "PnP OS" I don't mean the choice between ISA & PCI, but modern motherboards have the option to let either the BIOS or the OS control the available resources. Turning that off would allow Linux to control how resources are handed out.

If you want to check your BIOS settings go to http://www.pcguide.com, its the biggest resource I know, it's reliable and they explain everything.

Have you also tried booting a more recent distro that comes with a 2.2x kernel? I mean, Red-hat 5.2 comes with a std 2.0.36 kernel, and a lot of issues are solved in more recent kernels.

If you can give us the exact motherboard specifications including on-board chipsets, HD types etc etc, maybe I or some one else can come up with some more...

The chipset seems to be Triton-H. I think there may be somerthing wrong with the hardware as the computer that is working is also a Triton-H. I had a friend look at it and it is working. We had to disable the on-board controllers and use a controller card. It still seem to be having problems with COM ports, so I think I was sold a dud. I thank you fro your help. By the way the hard drives as all IDE Seagate, two are 340MB and one is 540MB. I think this answers your question. Thanks again.

Thumbs down

The computer is now running Windoze98 and seems happy. I think it's a case of windows altering hardware to make up for a lacklture product. So it seem the computer is doomed to be Linux-less (poor thing). I thank you for your help and suggestions in trying to free it from Windoze.
