I hit some stupid option in linux that makes it boot into xwindows all the time now and I want it to start out at just a command prompt again, could you please help me get it to start like this? Thanks.

You need to edit /etc/inittab and look for a line that contains the word initdefault. You will want to be in run level 3, so the line should look like this:
