I realize that this is a very basic question. Everything I've read on firewalls thus far, suggests that I should install a firewall on a separate computer, and use that computer solely for the firewall. This would sound very practical on a lan of computers, but I've only got my own computer here on a cable modem. Can I, and I should I install a firewall on this system? If so, does anyone know any good resources that I should take a look at? Thanks for any help.

For your setup installing ipchains or iptables on your system would be fine.
