Hey,
I have a site and i wanna set up my own dns lookup service. I have time and I am pretty curious on how to do it. i just dont know where to start. Does anybody know a good documentation to get me started? Nabil kinda helped me to find a free dns lookup service but i wanna learn how to do it myself. Also, which distro. do you think is the best for a web-server? One more last question, can i have multiple domain names on one machine?
Lets say,
can i run hotmail.com, msn.com, and aol.com in one machine? Thanks for your help.

The BEST book is undoubtedly O'Reilly's DNS and Bind" (its also available online), also visit isc.org ("publishers" of BIND) and CERT for general UNIX/security guidelines. I cant stress the importance of the last 2 enuff, the Lion worm bein a bad example of that.

"Best distro" is worth a flame-war during aeons, just like "Is Linux Better Than Windows) I'll better let the numbers speak.

Last one. Yes u can. But it involves some work with named.conf records and zones. Better read a piece of O'Reilly's first me thinks.

unSpawn is right I have thier 3rd edition of DNS and Bind

and its a great book... running DNS isn't hard to do

(believe it or not) I do it on a dialup machine where I work

its just something to play with to keep me busy learning.

I've been thinking about doing the same on my DSL box at home.

The hardest thing for me to remember is to change the Serial number after editing the zone file...

and maybe remembering to put the dots after the MX, NS and CNAME records....

I had a hard time getting virtual domains running at first

I searched a good while before I came up with a solution.

I only have one IP address so if you will have the same dilemma

this is what my httpd.conf file looks like:

(if I'm doing this wrong somebody please let me know)

NameVirtualHost IP.address.of.yourserver

<VirtualHost IP.address.of.yourserver>

DocumentRoot /var/www/html/ (<--this could be any Dir)

ServerName jim-bob.com

ServerAdmin jim@jim-bob.com

</VirtualHost>

and then it would look the same on down the line

except it would be a different virtual hosts pointed to different Dirs....

mine doesn't get much more complicated than that and it works great.

Of course it can get more complicated you can CHROOT your domains to make it more secure

(from what I've read I havent gotten that far yet....

I wish I would have found this guy http://www.acmebw.com/askmrdns a month ago! While my well-worn DNS and BIND (3rd. ed.) has been my crutch, it appears that important things like glue records escaped my attention. Go see Mr. DNS and get the book.
