I am trying to install a WinModem on RedHat 7.1 with the 2.4.5 Kernel. The WinModem install requires that models are present when the kernel is compiled. I am unable to build a Kernal with any external Modules. I think I have set all the switch's correctly.

Any thoughs as to what I am doing wrong.

Describe what you do and what error message it gives you.

I have compiled the Kernel with the following flags
Config_module=y
Config_modversion=y

The kernel builds and installs OK.

The complile of the WinModem is OK but when the install script is run no modules are found in the
/lib/module/2.4.5/kernel/drives/char directory.
I only and a /lib/module/2.4.5/kernel/drives/net directory.

I get a no directory found error.

ummm... Winmodems generally don't work in Linux. At all. Not even a little.

There are stories floating around about a couple of people that got them working, but honestly, a Windmodem isn't even a real modem. It's a device that passes everything it gets to a piece of software, which is, of course, closed source, so nobody really knows what's going on there.

Just another 'Embrace and Extend' feature of Windows.

You can check out http://www.linmodems.org They do have lists of modems that currently work under linux. And yes, there are a few winmodems out there working under linux, its just a matter of which ones, but they are still a pain so I don't even bother.
