Gnome is broken

Whenever I try to use Gnome, I do not have a panel on the bottom of my screen. Also, the file /root/core icon looks like a bomb with crossed eyes and tongue hanging out. I assume this means the file has become corrupted and needs to be reinsalled. How do I do this?

Bomb in root

That is a core dump. means a program has crashed. I usually delete them. If it is just the panel then you could check your /username/.gnome folder for a file called panel

change window managers, try anything

run gtop and look for a file called panel that may be running.

maybe it isn't on the screen

Take a look at the keep bottom setting.
maybe trying changing it, see what happens.

let us know what happens. I have not fixed this before.

try ctrl+esc

alternately: open a terminal and type panel&

my panel file looks like this:

1.) I was not able to find /username/.gnome
2.) Ran gtop and /panel/ was not running.
3,) Don't understand where to look for keep bottom setting.
4.) I am recalling this from memory: I right clicked on the Gnome screen and choose "run", then typed "panel" and the panel showed up. Don't know how I killed it and don't know if the "core" dump related to the absence of the panel.

Anyhow, thanks for the help. We are fixed. We learned a new command (gtop), and also learned what it means when you have a "core" icon showing up in a folder.
