I have one big issue, how do i make a "Dial-up connection" (windows lingo, hehe) in my linux box.

Another thing, how exactly do i mount my CDROM and floppy drive, i get either errors or sumtin when i try
mount -t /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

and cdrom is actually a link to -> hdc...
anyone who can help, i'd be most appreciative

Hmmm Dial up connection, might want to go read and try a few things after reading the modem howto at http://www.linuxdoc.org, there are many different ways to set that up after you know your modem is actually working.
Mounting, what type of error are you getting when mounting?
after the -t you should have a type of filesystem your mounting so it knows how to read it, like if it is msdos based, it would look like this: mount -t msdos /dev/cdrom and so on.....
Did you try to mount it with the hdc instead of cdrom, what does your fstab look like?
Sorry for all the questions, the more detail, the easier it is to determine what the problem is.

this is probably a bit rich comming from me when i posted a load of questions the other day

however, cdrom was one of the things i actually managed to get working on me own, with the help of several books and howtos

assuming you are goin to want to use ur cd drive regulary, its a lot easier to mount the drive if you add them to ur fstab file (/etc/fstab). i believe the line you need is:

/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

so ur device /dev/cdrom, (which is a link to /dev/hdc, ur actual cd drive, the link is purely for ease of use i believe) is mounted to /cdrom, which, obviously, is the folder 'cdrom' in ur root directory. all cd roms have an iso9660 filesystem, 'user' allows all users of ur system to mount the drive, 'noauto' means the cd drive will not be automatically mounted at boot, as it wont always be the same cd in ur drive every time you boot, and i cant find the bit that explains the two '0's , however i know they need to be set as 0 in each case

hope this helps, even if my grammar is a little dodgy

and i just found an increadably useful table for identifying which device ur cd drive is

you link 'cdrom' in /dev/ should point to hdx, where x is some lletter a to z

this is assuming you have an ATAPI cd drive with an ide interface

this will allow you to identify which one is ur cd drive

Variable Drive position
a..........primary master
b..........primary slave
c..........secondary master
d..........secondary slave

so my cd drive which is secondary master on my system, is hdc, and my dev/cdrom link points to hdc

agin. hope this helps

the 0 0 at the end aren;t necessary for the cdrom. they date back to the old arcane days when it was needed for back ups (they denote in what order to back the devices in and also how often [so they're only used for hard drives really])

but it not needed ne more since none of the newer programs use it nemore.

Alex

P.S. if this doesn;t work then post more details
