Okay, so i'm not a total linux newbie, but I'm pretty damn close. I messed around with Corel on an old 200mhz for a while, and everything went peachy. Recently, I decided I wanted to try again, but my new computer has a GeForce 2, which Corel doesn't support, so I installed Mandrake 8 instead. Everything went peachy with the install- I have Windows 98 on C, a 5 gig backup on D, and then a Linux partition with the rest of the space. But I'm having a few problems, and need some help.
First, I'm using the dual-booter that came with Mandrake 8.. I want it to default to Windows 98 and only boot Mandrake if I select it manually, but right now, it does the opposite. How can I fix this?
Second, I have an SB Live! 5.1 series, connected to my speakers through the digital DIN output.. Mandrake automatically plays sound out of the analog output, which I have a set of headphones connected to. I know there probably isn't, but I figured I'd ask if there was a way to make Mandrake use the digital output?
Third, and major problem, I can't get the internet to work. I have an old 266mhz Cyrix machine running Windows 98 SE Internet Connection Sharing to share its direct connection to a cable modem. Corel worked fine with the shared connection, but Mandrake has had some problems. We don't use DHCP, which is why its a little tricky..
In Windows, I use TCP/IP and IPX/SPX, "Client for Microsoft Networks," with IP 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1, and DNS enabled with DNS Server Searchorder being 24.88.1.66 and 24.88.1.67.. Then I just let IE do auto-proxy detect and it worked fine. Now how do I put these settings into Mandrake?
Fourth, is there anyway to access files on the FAT32 partitions in Mandrake? I was able to do it with Corel, but haven't been able to figure out how to do it in Mandrake yet.
I don't know where Mandrake has its init scripts, probably somewhere in /etc/rc.d, buy you need to change the network init from dhcp to a manual entry, like the one below:
You will be much better off if you ditched the Windows ICS box and made the linux box your firewall and gateway. It's more secure, faster, and you could host such services as: http, ftp, mail, ssh with your static IP.
I know, crabboy. Like I said, I know Linux is better.. But the fact is that I don't know how to use it yet and therefore I don't know how to get it setup correctly.
And to point out a fact, I'm already running an http and ftp server on my Windows ICS box, and occasionally I run game servers too.
Thanks for the networking help tho- I'm gonna go try those settings out now.
And oh yes, I found out how to access the FAT32 partitions on my own. I booted to Gnome instead of KDE, and Gnome had a shortcut to the FAT32 partitions on the desktop.. I looked at where the shortcut pointed to, and didn't have any trouble getting back to it when I booted KDE.
