Whats the error when trying to run FVWM? It might need to be reinstalled or something if it doesn't want to work. It all depends on the error you recieve when trying to use it instead of just GNOME.

Different distibutions will vary in switching desktops. Debian is fantastic, you just select them on a menu. In Redhat 6.x, you choose Desktop Switcher from the menu, then choose AnotherLevel. In AnotherLEvel you can change window managers better, but it defaults to FVWM which is what you want anyway. So, it all depends on what dist you are using.
