Howdy, a friend's win95 pc just died, so I'm now making him my official linux guinea pig. I'm pretty technical (though never worked with linux), but lazy and he's not very technical, but diligent. With those thoughts in mind, I've narrowed my choices down to Mandrake and SuSE and was just wanting some feedback from anyone that has an opinion. He's curretly got a U.S. Robotics 56K, but will be getting a cable modem. So, any feedback, particularly pertaining to cable modem support would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
I use SuSE 7.1 and am quite happy with it. The support is good though sometimes it can take a day or so to get back to you. The install is pretty easy using YaST2, and there are a few tools i have noticed for cable modems (don't have one myself).
Should get alot of answers as everyone here is proud of there own particular flavor of linux. I think there is a cd available with different distributions on it that you can try. Might ask someone about that and try a few of them out.
Hope this helps,
Dallam

I use RedHat, no problems with cable connection either with it using it on Redhat, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian and any others Distro's I have tried.
Any questions about cable connection, just ask, or what cable modem provider would it be through?, familiar with both major one's, Road Runner and @HOME.
I do recommend Mandrake though if you know nothing of Linux.
