According to this article the only two distros that currently work on Pentium IV systems are Red Hat and Turbo Linux. It has something to do with the CPUID database, which is needed to identify the CPU during the install.

The article looks as though Intel have really screwed up their pentium series. I used to admire the pentiums, for their speed and TV adverts! But it looks as though they have really shot themselves with this new CPU, especially seeing that AMD are already one step ahead (sorry jeremy!).

The 2.2.18 kernel from kernel.org has added support for the Pentium 4 processor. It was a CPUID related issue, apparently Intel decided to skip a number or something somewhere (I am very fuzzy on the details, I read an article on it late last night and I will try and find it for you) and the kernel wasn't perpared for that. Anyway, it is suppose to be fixed with the 2.2.18 kernel for those of you with a P4 processor.

No reason to be sorry CragStar Although I do like Intel I must admit that they really have been making fools out of themselves lately. Oh well. Maybe AMD will win be over some day - but it won't be with the duron I just bought! jtshaw is absolutely correct 2.2.18 does indeed correct the problem. Intel decided to skip to 15 instead of just adding one to the previous number like the kernel developers had planned. Maybe they had a few chips that never made it to market...
