You want to put LILO on the or in the MBR (Master Boot Record). Its sometimes a good idea to make a /boot partition too for your boot files for Linux.
You should have a partition for Windows, then for Linux I recommend at least this:

swap
/boot
/

So you should at least have 4 total partitions. Be careful of the 1024 cylinder when installing LILO. If not, then there are ways around it.
You might want to specify your specs on your windows partition size and type like fat32, ntfs and etc, total size of hard drive and such....gives a better understanding of what would be best for your setup.

Also, Linux doesn't refer to partitions or harddrives as C:, D: or E:, if you created the partitions in Windows as vfat or wahtever DOS filesystem partitions, they won't be readable in Linux when installing, your going to have to wipe those out when installing Linux and then create your swap, / and maybe /boot partitions.

Hope this helps.

Dual booting

I have a problem related to this somewhat. I have three partitions on my 20G drive, 10G NTFS, 10G e2fs (hda2, mounted as / ) and a small swap partition. SuSE 7 is installed on my Linux partition and I have created a LILO boot disk that doesn't work. I can get to my linux partition if I boot from the CD, but I'm not too enamored with this solution. I guess I am running into this 1024 problem that trickykid was talking about. You also alluded to a solution to that problem. If you could say a little more about this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I should also say that my NTFS partition is working just fine (or as well as can be expected), so chopping it up, and having 2 NTFS partitions and 3 e2fs partitions is pretty far from ideal in my mind.

Goto http://www.rastersoft.com/gageng.htm and download the free boot manager, then you can configure it to boot to the Windows 2000 or Linux partion.

I did this with my SuSE 7.0/Win2k/Whistler install and it works great. If it doesn't work at first, use the SuSE CD and get to a root prompt and run YaST to configure lilo to the install itself to the partition that has /boot mounted on it..most likely your root (/) partion. That should install lilo properly and GAG should boot between them just fine.

As far as I know it is not possible to use the Win2k boot menu to boot to Linux, but it is possible for lilo to boot to Win2k (not NTFS, I don't think).

I just make it easy on myself and use GAG, it's free and fits on a floppy and will boot anything.
