Question

I have windows 2000 and Mandrake linux 7.2 installed on my computer. I have it set up to dual boot and I have a 13 gig. FAT 32 partition which I think i can use for files that would be recognized by both operating systems. Windows 2000 recognizes the partition without any problem but I'm not sure how to get at the files from Linux. I am a very new Linux user so if this is a really obvious/stupid question I apologize.

Just for clarification, you are trying to access your Win2k files FROM your Mandrake 7.2 system?

Like you said, as long as you are running Fat32 for Win2k, this won't be a huge problem. However, If you're trying to access Linux files from Win2k (assuming your linux system is using Ext2), you're heading the wrong way. I don't know of any ext2 readers for Win2k. So I just want to check with the specifics before adding a more helpful response

Thats correct. I would like to access files on the Fat 32 partition while in Mandrake Linux.

Question VFat

Well, now we can get a little dirty with this, first, have you tried mounting it using linuxconf? I've done it this way successfully with a win98 / rh7 system.

You just have to select the partition (which is now named in the proper linux fashion, hda1, hda2...etc). If you know which it is (most likely the existing partition that isn't currently mounted ) then you can just go into linuxconf and add a local drive with the VFAT type. Give it a shot...

vfat / ext2fs filesystem access...

There is a program that will allow you to access ext2fs (Linux native) partitions from within Win9x (including ME and 2000). It's calles 'explore2fs'. Can download it from:
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm

The software is still in the development stage, so don't expect miracles, but it does have the option to view 'non standard partitions: 0x00' which I believe will allow you to see (if not write to) things like the Minix fs, QNX fs, etc.

Try it.
