    what is ODIN?

    Hi.

i'm trying to get familiar with internals of android .

    first question:

    what is ODIN?
when i run my phone in download mode (which apparently is a convenient way to flash your rom) i get the message ODIN xxxx

    #2 Q:
what alternatives are there for ODIN? is there one for linux?

    #3 Q:
is there a way to root my phone without flashing the rom?

    cheers

This looks like an old thread but if you are still looking for help, I can answer questions 1 & 3.

    1. ODIN is the software that Samsung uses to load updates, ROMS, etc. on their phones.

    3. Yes you can "root" your phone without changing the installed software. For all intents and purposes, the rooting process unlocks the admin (root) account on the phone and usually installs a small program (superuser.apk) to allow management of the admin permissions you have granted. Depending on the method/phone mfg involved, some also do things like unlock the boot loader or remove locks on the phone's memory.

To bring up an old thread yet again, I'll answer question 2.

Heimdall works on linux (it's what I used for my SGSII), you read about it here:
