    Question Android = Linux?

    Hey,
I have been a Linux user (Debian) for about 2-3 months now and I got my first smartphone (for free!) yesterday.
I kind of really like it. (Now I don't have to be busy with a message for half an hour like on my €19 cellphone I was using for a long time.)

    Allright,
I know that Android is an operation system (like Windows, DOS, BSD, Linux distributions, OS X, iOS, Solaris, ...) and that it is based upon the Linux kernel.
But is Android actually 'Linux' in the way that for example an Ubuntu user uses Linux as his core/kernel for making his/her computer run?
Or is it even a Linux distribution?
I heard it's kind of debatable but I thought I could get some information/opinions on the subject here.

If it would be the case that Android is actually Linux that means there are a lot more Linux users than the roughly 40-50 million Linux desktopusers, not speaking of supercomputers, servers like Google, mainframes, ... running Linux of course.
