can I make external SD card an EXT2/3 file system?

If I use my Linux workstation and do the mkfs.ext2 or mkfs.ext3 dance, can someone tell me how to enable mounting that SD card on my Android v4.4.2 (KitKat) phone or tablet? My Linux workstation is very happy with the resulting storage, but ...

I know that win-dose (win-doze) or cameras and such will not longer be able to access the contents.

Generally KitKat likes exFAT, preferably formatted on another device. If not, you may not be able to execute or wrote to the card, rendering it useless.

Rooting KitKat 4.4.2 is almost impossible, which adds to the problem.
