Does it matter which firmware you install?

    Hello:

There are firmwares for the various issuers of the Galaxy S II - Bell Canada, T-Mobile etc.

Can I use anyone of these on my phone?

Am I correct in believing that my SIM card is what really matters as far as having a phone that actually works?

Thanks for any guidance on this,
    Rob. (A complete android newbie!)

Well, I still do not know the answer but I did do some flashing for the hell of it to see what would happen.

I did not try a 'carrier specific' (Bell Canada, T-Mobile etc) firmware but I did use firmware that I found at different sights specific to my Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100 phone and they all worked. (sometimes I had to change the default language)

I think I went from a Spanish Firmware (came on my amazon.ca phone) to a UK version to a German version.

Now my phone is running Android 2.3.6, Baseband version I9100XXKI4, GINGERBREAD.XWKKS and seems to be fine but I'm not sure that I would know if it wasn't - one of the joys of being a newbie - ignorance is bliss.

It doesn't seem to matter too much which 'country code' is used but I really don't know for certain.

Marking as SOLVED because, 'Ignorance is bliss!'

My plan is with Petro Canada and is unlimited for phone, messages & web.

    My bill is $58.33 monthly.

    Why do you ask?

It really doesn't matter where the software comes from (I suppose it might if your carrier has some funky nonstandard network), but it's the technology that's important. A ROM with a GSM radio will mess up a CDMA phone.
