What sort of connection are you trying to make? Is it Bluetooth, usb or wireless?

Generically, connect the phone to the Ubuntu box and map a drive to it just like you would any usb storage device and use the file manager to move files back and forth.
Or
Come up to speed on the software development kit SDK and use that.
Or
Install bluetooth apps on the phone and the box, make them both "Discoverable" and use the Bluetooth file manager to do the manipulation.
You might want to look at Astro filemanager and the Bluetooth plugin in the Android Markket ( Now known as the Play Store)
