Help! I need some help please! I just finished installing Mandrake 7.2. Linux detects my modem, which is a 3Com US Robotics 56K internal pnp isa, as a sportster . It will not work and I can not modify it to the correct settings. I/O, I/R etc. Any advice. I am back to Win Me!

What kernel are you running? I'm quite sure that your USR modem requires 2.3 or greater. I'm running one in Red Hat and couldn't get the system to recognize it until I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.1.

Recognized it right away after the kernel upgrade.

HTH.

I don't think you might not need to upgrade your kernel, have you tried disabling the PNP feature? If it is a ISA and PNP, you might need to do that for it to work properly.
If you don't know how to do that, might want to check out the Modem Howto: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html or the Plug n Play Howto: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Plug-and-Play-HOWTO.html
Try that or see what you can't come up with first without upgrading the kernel. I am sure it will work without the newest kernel.

You can download it within Windows, or any other connection, save it onto some sort of media, best if you can burn it onto a CD and then install and compile from there.

What happened from my other possible solution, did you try any of the steps on the plug and play or modem howto's at http://www.linuxdoc.org?
