Question

Hi,

I have just installed RedHat 7.1 (previously I used 7.0). But I can’t seem to install lilo. It keeps on say something about lba32??????
I tried “lilo –L” but it did not help.

Any advice would be appreciated.

try if this works...
open up /etc/lilo.conf
at the top, before the kernels, add "lba32" on a line of its own. Now run "/sbin/lilo -t -v" to have it test what its doin. if it goes well, replace the -t for test with -s /boot/bootsect.bak and itll execute installing lilo while making a backup of the current bootsector.
if this generates other errors like boot.b version mismatches IMO its best to install a a newer version of lilo.

Thanx for the advice.
I edited the /etc/lilo.conf file and added lba32.
I ran “/sbin/lilo –t –v “ and received the following:

Reading boot sector from /dev/hda
Merging with /boot/boot.b
Fatal: ‘linear’ and ‘lba32’ (-l and –L) are mutually exclusive.

What does this mean?

Hi
You need to remove the reference to ''linear'' in the file /etc/lilo.conf. I'me on RH7.1 too this is my /etc/lilo.conf if it helps

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
lba32
default=linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-2
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda6
append="hdd=ide-scsi"

other=/dev/hda1
optional
label=loose
