Hi We downloaded Corel linux version 2. Copied it. booted from Cdrom. Wanted to put it on D drive as it is a 12 mb empty drive. The program started said setting up, copying, checking hardware then a black screen with graphical interface starting saying...Then Nothing. It opened my cdrom and shutdown. Repeated this several times and got same thing. So, went out and bought a boxed version. Same thing! What gives?? Someone please help me. Oh yes, i did shut off my boot up virus protector as once it said I had a boot virus. Please any help. Oh this is a pentium 111 processor 550 with 384 mb of ram. Please anyone have any clues?

OK, I am not familiar w/the Corel distribution, but under Linux there is no such thing as a D: drive!
I guess you meant 12 GB and not MB, cause that would not be enough, THAT would lock up, yes.
If that's not the prob, give more info on your hardware and what bootoption etc you selected.
Are your drives scsi or ide?

Goofed!

Yes I meant 12 gb hehee. And I never got a chance to tell this os where I wanted to put it. That option never comes up. It says it's loading opens my cdrom for me to take my cd and then the machine reboots. And then nothing. Corel linux uses the kde. Yes it is ide also. Thank-you

One more

I tried to load this with both a floppy disc and a cdrom. I also saw in the newsletter other people have had this problem also. But, I have never seen any solutions posted. I'm about to give up on linux. Tried linux-mandrake 7.2. And heck it would go in fine and then it would have permanent errors. Never could figure out how to fix that.

Well, Mandrake is supposedly very user-friendly and in your case it seems to have gone further than Corel did, so why not try to get that going?
Please tell more about what type of Hardware you have installed in particular how many HDDs and how you partitioned them.
The more info, the better chance people have here to assist you.
I am still in the fooling-around stage myself, so I probably am not of such a big help to you, but try to give some facts that are reproduceable or give somewhat a clue where the system is, when it looks up.
While booting there should be a chance to enter some boot parameters or look up the documentation of the corel package for some expert console or some expert installation.

I too have tried Corel Linux and I am not a fan of the installer or the distribution. While I can see why you would be tempted to give up on Linux I will go out on a limb here and recommend that you try Debian (www.debian.org)or Progeny (www.progeny.com).

Debian is considered to be a difficult distribution to install; however, you may find this link to be helpful:
http://www.debian.org/releases/potato/installguide/

Progeny is one of the latest Debian-based distributions which supposedly has a more user-friendly install than pure Debian. I have not tried it out though so I cannot vouch for it.

I realize that this does not answer your question at all but perhaps maybe . . . just maybe this last attempt will do it. Anyway, good luck with your continuing linux adventures and remember to keep posting if you have further questions.

Exclamation Help!!

Ok I think I finally stopped freezing. This doesn't make sense but have been on here for 3 hrs. with no freezeups and I could not make it over 10 minutes before. I had 128 mb of ram/100 and 256/133. They are suppose to be compatible. But.. I had a friend that when she took out one it solved her problems. Mine too it seems. Ok so now maybe I can download linux-mandrake without freezing constanly. But still have an error. This machine wants me to change the ram speed to 133 now and I can not find anyplace in the bios that appears to do that. I want this all to be perfect this time. Hehe. Ok also my problem with corel is that it doesn't recognize my Ati all in wonder Radeon Video card? Duhhh I would think it should still go to setup. While i am at it in the bios, Does anyone know how to speed up that silly memory check? Mine is on so slow now. Use to be speeded up. Thanks all. The reason I would like to use the Linux-Mandrake 7.2 and then upgrade it to 8.0 is that I paid 70 dollars for it! oh AND paid 20 for the corel. Thanks all

Hmm . . . I'm not an expert on graphics but I would hazard a guess that corel cannot setup your video card because the version of XFree86 it ships with may be too outdated . . . which is a problem with corel linux in general. As for the Bios business . .. no idea. Does Corel abort the entire install because of the video card or does it carry on without setting up the video?

Me too!

I've been having the same exact problem as you with Corel 2nd Edition with my HP Pavilion Notebook N3190! It just loads the beginning screen then shoots out my cd and restarts, just like that! It makes no sense. I'm about to give Linux Mandrake 8.0 a try, I have two machines though, so if it doesn't work on one, hopefully it will work on the other. If you figure out what's up with Corel, please let me know. According to investigating old newsgroups and such, it may be my video card, a Silicon Motion Lynx EM, but who knows. Thanks for listening, let me know how Linux-Mandrake goes!

Sincerely,
Jenny Meekhof

I know why but doesn't help

Apparently corel linux does not recognize my All in wonder Radeon video card. So, it just flat doesn't install.

Please do not use old threads for any questions. Start a new thread instead.
( This thread is is dated 2001.)

Corel Linux 1 is older : 1999. Corel was bought by Xandros ( 2003 ?).

Corel Linux 2 : May be it's the Xandros_Desktop_2 : 2004.
