I installed Linux-Mandrake 8 and when I booted up my computer for the first time in Linux, I get into the console. Well, first of all how do I get to the x-windows (eg KDE) from the console? And how do I fix this so it goes into the graphical login? Thanks for your help!

Arrow to get to x-window 'system'

first, don't call it x-windows, it's not anything to do with windows, this will only get people irritated by reminding them of the evil empire. second, it is as simple as a command to get into X.

-log in with your username and password (probably root, if you want to fix the problem with no automated start of X.)

-type in: startx

that's it!

you should go directly to your user's default desktop manager (kde probably).

read docs about how to configure X and sessions by using mandrake's helpful desktop icons in KDE.

Thanks a bunch!

Well, I got into X now I have another problem. I read the documentation but can't figure out how to get into gnome using the console, it's not my default but KDE is.. well every time I move the mouse KDE drags the colors and lines all over the screen so it's hard to do anything. Do you have any suggestions to either fix this or how to get into gnome with the console so I can give that a try??? Or maybe how to configure it so it goes to the graphical login. I've read the documentation and will continue to read it but I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks!

-Jenny

P.S. Thanks for the suggestion about calling it X it helps to know these kinds of things

Goto the Mandrake Control center and select Display. Once you have gone through configuring it again you will be given the opportunity to start X on boot. You want to select this.

If you want, instead of typing startx, you can try kdm or gdm and either one of these will give you a graphical login into X, then you can choose from there what desktop display to use, either KDE or GNOME or any others that might be installed.
You can also make your default runlevel at boot at runlevel 5, so it does this everytime at bootup, its actually more secure this way too as from the terminal command prompt.

Just some more suggestions.

Alright, one more thing...hopefully!

Thanks a bunch to all who helped out! You're making this Linux thing a whole lot smoother, the path is somewhat less confusing. Now I've got more trouble, so I thought I'd ask if you could tackle this one last thing. I spoke in my last post that KDE is smearing colors all over the page, well so is Gnome, so I can't really do anything. Can anyone help me with this trouble, or is this normal?

Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Jenny

your xfree86 version, its gonna keep doing that, u need to upgrade your distro to 7.1, it's the easiest way... for reference, we're working on this in another thread:

goto: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...readid=3062its

and to let u know, i had the same problem w/ mandrake 8 and my hp m50 monitor, but rh 7.1 kicks, and uses the 'good' version of xfree86. extra.extra. get ur kudos in 7.1... sorry i'm a little excentric (not to mention fanatical.)

anyway, there u go. later.

You could just keep your Mandrake 8 and update your x version. Have you tried reconfiguring maybe your refresh rates for you monitor? That might help.

Red face sorry, thought u said u had redhat... but here:

you should have a program called 'xf86config', you can call it from within a terminal, no matter what directory it is in. if you know your refresh rate for a given resolution, you can set up everything thru here.

what u need 2 know:

- your monitor specs

- mouse type

- and graphics chipset/board.
-------(use the reference list it offers to plug in yours, this will make the settings cherry!)

if in doubt about something find out its specs before using this prog!

it will ask u questions, all you do is answer them to configure your xfree86 settings... and it does give you a little help by explaining stuff a bit.

i don't know a url to get to any howto or doc specifically, but like i said, the prog helps u a little so u should be alright.

if you get stuck, or freak out and want to abort, u can just hit [ctrl]-[c] to abort without saving.

anyway, hth

I configured xfree86 with the exact settings I got from calling the manufacterer, but it did not help, I hope I did it right! Any more suggestions? I'm currently attempting to update my current xfree86 to version 4.1.0, I'm hoping this works, if I do it correctly, I'm noit sure that I know how to switch to the saved file though, so I'm not sure if I'm even using the new file when I reconfigured it. Thanks again for all your help!

Go to Failsafe and configure your default there

I loaded 8.0 yesterday, and everytime I booted into linux, it would go straight to the command line (console mode). So I would reboot and go into failsafe, and select graphical mode which would take me directly to the graphical login screen. What I didn't know was that from the failsafe screen, you can go a little deeper into configuration defaults and actually set the default login for text or graphical. That solved it for me.
