Question Replacing ISA network card

I have this problem is one my the linux server that I 'm currently working on. The machine has an ISA network card installed. The moment i take that card out of that machine and boot up, the boot up process would only go quarter or half way and then it hangs.

So i have to have that ISA network card in. The problem is, i figure that the card is faulty. I want to replace it with another card. I tried taking the ISA card out and replacing it with a PCI card, but the same thing happens. The machine would boot up, the boot up process would only go quarter or half way and then it hangs.

So i have to have the ISA card back in that machine in order for the machine to boot up properly. I even tried changing the ISA card with another ISA card, but still it work boot up. I think I 'm using Red Hat 6.0 or 5.2. How do you get around this problem? Thanks.

What exactly do you see on the screen when the boot process halts?

Look for a ethernet init setting in your /etc/lilo.conf file. It may look something like this:

append = "ether=11,0x300,4,0x3c509,eth0"

This tells the kernel to look for the card at that address. If the card at the address is acting up it may be freezing the box.

remove any option that says 'ether'

append = ""

Keep us posted.
