Unhappy WINS Questions

I am currently running RedHat7.1 and I am desperately trying to get my machine onto the network but am having many problems. The most current probelm is that we've recently installed a WINS server to resolve hostnames. The problem is that we're also using DHCP for IP assignments. It works a treat with NT machines but the Linux machine doesn't seem to be sending the correct information to the WINS server to allow it to create the IP-Hostname lookup. Is there a way to do this or do I need to give the Linux machine a static IP and deal with it that way?
Also, since the new WINS server went in, I've been unable to make any connections into my Linux machine (telnet, ftp, http ..), even if I use the IP address (I get connection reset by peer). I can ping this IP and it works fine. Could this be traced back to the new WINS server or is this a completely different problem.
I am somewhat of a newbie to Linux so please be gentle (I'm not a moron though so don't treat me with kid gloves). Thanks for all your help, I hope that someday I might be able to return the favour.

-Stu
