Mysqld

I have an idea on something that I want to do and I want to make sure that I won't run into any problems.

I want to set up a dual boot with engarde-linux and redhat linux, (one computer, and I like to work on multiple projects at once) I want to have engarde be my server, but instead of developing stuff on the engarde system, I want to do it on the redhat system. My question is if I can will be able to enter information into the engarde mysql database while I am booted into redhat. I will have mysqld running on redhat. This is the only obstacle I am currently concerned with. I guess I could dump the redhat databases and import them into the engarde database after booting into engarde but I would like to keep redundant information to a minumum by storing the databases in one location only.

Is this a possible endeavor and if so, what problems can I expect. If I don't make any sense here, let me know.

If I was trying this I'd have mysql installed in a directory that has a common mount point on both systems. That way you'll efectively be running the same DB on both systems. If for some reason you can't do it with the whole of mysql you could do this with just the files that hold your tables, mysql uses a pretty simple file structure.

I just wanted to say that it works great, I did this for mysqld and for apache and saved myself all kinds of space. Not too mention all of the time I save by not having to copy html files from dir to dir and not having to do database dumps for every update.

Thanks for the tip.

I would probably just use a partition solely for the mysql database files and keep the binaries tied to the OS. Of course we'll keep the versions and compile options identical, won't we???

yeah that is exactly what I am doing. The server installation will be a hardened installation with LIDS, snort etc, etc, and no compilers. The developement installation will have all the goodies installed.

I would think the mysqld version wouldn't be that critical, but I am not about to find out the hard way. I plan on keeping them in sync. The only thing that is going to be shared between the installations wil be the actual databases and the website content. partitions containing software will only be mounted on the appropriate installation.

I also plan on trying to keep the UID's and GID's (apache's and mysql's ) equivelant on each installation, in order to prevent permission problems that could arise.

Since this server is going to be for private use only (at least for now), I have found this to be very useful.
