in middle of compiling kernel! help please

I'm attempting to upgrade my 2.2.17 kernel to a 2.4.3. this is my first time doing a kernel upgrade and I'm stuck at the make modules stage.I keep getting error messages like ***[_mod_drivers] Error 2. It seems to stem from the SCSI configuration because from reading back through the terminal output it stops at SCSI and starts making error messages from there. I have no SCSI drives or controllers on my machine as it is a standard PIII 500MHz. I intend to buy a cd writer in the near future and I know that SCSI emulation has to be enabled. In order for the writer to work, what else should I include support for in the SCSI config section of Xconfig? Any information on conflicts or otherwise would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

What compiler are you using? Post the output of
Code:
gcc -v
and
Code:
gcc --version
. I've had problems with pgcc when building the 2.4 tree (pggc 2.95.2). If you are moving from 2.2 to 2.4 the you will need to get a new version of the modutil package, otherwise moprobe and insmod and the other module tools will get a little confused.

Cheers

gcc -v version 2.95.3 19991030 (prerelease)
gcc --version 2.95.3

where can I get the upgrade? Is there anything else that I need?

Cool... just checking that you weren't using the broken Redhat compiler...

Did you have any problems when you unpacked the kernel source, I'm just wondering if you've got any corrupt files there. The other thing I'd suggest is getting the latest kernel if you can. If you're upgrading you might as well use the newest one you can. 2.4.6 is the latest now AFAIK. I can't say that I've had any problems compiling, certainly not ones that were affected by my kernel options. Your make dep and make bzmImage (or make bzlilo for that matter) work OK?

Sorry that I can't give any definate answers...

kernel

yea they seem to be fine, everything is until I get to "make modules" then it gets stuck on SCSI. I tried downloading and installing the latest modutils package but it hasn't worked either. When doing the make modules bit, it gets to SCSI and I get a message saying "yacc: command not found"
all a right pain in the a%£^ . Thanks for your help though

Aha! Sounds like you need to get your hands on yacc then... I have a feeling that lots of system use Bison and Flex instead now. Have a search for packages relating to yacc, bison or flex. If you want the source for Bison and/or Flex then have a look at one of the mirrors of ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/

HTH

Just downloaded the bison source. I'll make another attempt at it tomorrow. Thanks for all your help, I think a few pints are in order tonight, thanks again
