vmlinuz

sorry for my ignorance, but can anyone tell me what vmlinuz is and if it's ok to remove it?

I'm trying to clear out some space.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 1.3G 1.1G 70M 94% /

Also, is there any good way to safely go about removing stuff that I don't really need? I am running slackware 7 lilo booting 2000?

sorry for the newbieness
thx alot in advance.

if you are talking about /boot/vmlinuz, you are about to remove your kernel. If you want to remove stuff, you should uninstall it. I thought that slackware had an uninstaller. The only thing a newbie should be removing by hand is files that you created. But then again, you learn from every mes-up.

Maybe a slackware guru can help you gain some space.

Good Luck

umm... go ahead if you plan on NOT using Linux no more.

the way i see it is this, if you don't know what it is, then don't delete it. i made that mistake a long time ago starting out on computers.

doh, leaving vmlinuz alone, got it, thx.

I can't find anything on slackware uninstaller.

I'm just confused because I've just installed about a month ago and haven't downloaded anything so I don't know what could be taking up all of my space - is there maybe any general suggestions on what I could do to clear up some space or maybe a good link?

oh yeah, thx for the previous responses, **whew**

The Slackware tool is pkgtool but I've never really bothered with it! To find out what directorys are using up all the space use du -h.

HTH, best to be careful what you erase eh!

pkgtool is the definate way to de-install all .tgz slackware packages. You must realize though that if you remove anything crucial to booting your system(base package A1 for example) you cannot recover. Look through CAREFULLY and remove the excess items you don't use.
