You need to get the Howto and follow it.

Do a search for this

Howto hookup ppp in linux

It will tell you everything.

maybe a solution...

People, People, if our fellow members wanted to read how-to's they would have done so, instead they come to an outstanding board like this one...

Ok...what type of busy signal are you getting? Is it fast? "beepbeepbeepbeep" instead of "beep..beep..beep"? Also, which dial-up program are you using?

Could be (if really fast beeps) you have the way your number dials out totally configured wrong.

The best thing to do is to disable all that country predialing numbers crap unless, of course, you live in one of those other countries. Are you, like me, an Atlantan and you have to dial area code + number but not "1" first? If so, the best thing to do is to not enter any prefixes, area codes, etc. Rather, the thing to do is to trick the dialer. If your local ISP number is 404-266-8989 and you dont use a 1 but have to use the entire aea code then enter under phone number (or add if yu like to configure direct scripts ;-)) 4042668989.

Also, if you need to add *70 (disabling call waiting) do it like this: *70,4042668989 -- the comma will add about 2 seconds in case your dialer dials really fast.

I hope this helps but you can always email me at hseritt@bellsouth.net or pm me at philfighter on yahoo messenger with specifics. I am more than happy to help and am not a linux elitist! :-)

This is good advice, but I believe that with netzero as your isp your troubles have not begun yet. You must figure out what your isp is wanting in form of chat scripts, etc.

This howto is the way, the truth, and the light.

http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html

seriously, everyone should read this one. You will learn a lot about you system in the process.

never assume... it makes an @$$ ...

well yu know the rest...

of course, i had assumed that with the dialup (as far as numbers go) that netzero would work like a NORMAL isp. Actually, I have heard horror stories of trying to connect to them.

I always recommend spending a little more dough and connecting with bellsouth.net or at&t. Unlike other feel-good packages from AOL and MSN etc you only have to know the phone number, the domain name (ie, bellsouth.net), the primary and secondary dns (for example, 205.152.0.20 and 205.152.0.5) and switch the protocol to either pap or chap and it works very easily.

Isn't Netzero free, or are you paying for the premium service type plan. I thought these free ISP's don't support Linux, unless I am mistaken now and they do.

unless you're paying for the service, then it's not supported on linux. on windows it has that annoying banner ad that can't be hidden or minimized.

assuming that you ARE paying for the service, then i still don't know for sure, but it could be problems with you pppd. are you getting any error messages in /var/log/messages?

just my opinion...

Unless there's a real cause (in the case of linux or the gnu project, etc.) free things like free ISPs and the like will probably never succeed.

try a good isp that costs anywhere between 9.00$ to 20$ a month. And I mean a good dialup service, one that doesnt require you to use a special browser or anything like that. Personally, Ive noticed that Bellsouth (or your local Ma-Bell monopoly hehe) or AT&T are great ones for dialup. They are simple to configure, connect easily and quickly and are missing a lot of the junk out there that a lot of these people seem to want to install on your system.

Good luck, dude. I know getting on the web with a linux box can be the most difficult and stressing things!

I appreciate the compliment to the board, but referring someone to excellent documentation that is already written and works is anything but a brush off.

People come here for answers, and as all experienced support folks know... duplicating someone else's effort is a complete waste of time.

I will go out on a limb here and say that if someone doesn't "want" to read the info that some other caring individual has so graciously documented for everyone else to enjoy, then that person isn't deserving of my, or anyone else's time.

the reason these message boards exist to get many people's experiences and opinions about certain issues

to be perfectly honest, those who, instead of giving genuine advice on HOW to do things and give examples, give url's here there and everywhere on howtos etc, seem to me to be taking the easy way out of a question and go to google or whatever and find a link to the posted question.

personally i take great pride in finding a problem myself, and finding the solution to it, be it by posting here, searching the net, and finding out it worked, and passing on this good fortune to others.

so in future when someone asks a question you aint sure of, "lurk" until an answer comes, dont just do the searching as sometimes, it doesnt matter how good the documentation is, the actual reading and applying the help isnt that easy.

maybe you can setup the dialup dialog, it may be something simple like them asking for "name" where you are looking for "login".

debug the connection attempt by putting debug in the /etc/ppp/options file and look in /var/log/messages to see what is going on.

and yes, two years later this is still the way to see if it's going to work or not...

your win modem may have issues with the kernel.

Does it continue to boot after about five minutes or so?
