View Poll Results: WHY SWITCH TO LINUX?
BECAUSE LINUX IS THE BEST!!

Because I am a hacker (not a cracker!) and mess around with the code!
I'm suprised by the percentage of hackers out there! I think Linux is dependable, and I just don't like Microsoft! I also like to play with source code, because I am a programmer. Only know python and some tcl, though.
Linux has the flexablity and functionality of many devices all in one machine, router, firewall, webserver, and workstation, at the very low cost of FREE!! Also I don't like to reboot, find it very irritating.
Distribution: Redhat v8.0 (soon to be Fedora? or maybe I will just go back to Slackware)

Contrary to popular belief, WindowsNT and Windows2000 .... when installed and maintained properly... can be a very stable dependable product. On the other hand... when Linux is not installed or maintained properly, it can be very unstable and very undependable. So its not just the product.. its more than that.
Linux means choice. Linux means freedom. I don't have any restrictions as to what I can do. I have power, but that requires taking some responsibility.
I have the source code, I can adapt it to my needs. I can copy it, share it, or give it away. I can strip it down or build it up. I can run it on an embedded ROM based system or a build a supercluster out of it. I can support it myself or purchase top notch support from many major service providers.
On top of all that.. it rox. Its fast, light, and stable. Its easy to understand and fun to use.
Man....I use to be afraid to use Linux. Microsoft had me brain washed...had me so dependent on the spoon feedin' but; once I switched...I dropped windoze on all my computers except for one (which my wife uses)..Its just unbelievable on what u can do with all that power in ur hands....Ohhh Yeah!!! Bill Gates...Its on now!!!! Linux till I die....
I started using Linux because my university's computer department runs Sparc Ultra 5's and Solaris. As much as i like the conecept of linux and so forth, it's not of any substantial use for a general user, and can be such a git to use at times. I want to burn CD's, use my scanner, rip CD's, play games and so forth. None of which is remotely easy to do in linux as far as I have found, and obivously not something an average windows user can do by any stretch of the imagination.
I know that Linux IS very good for servers and all that technical gubbins, but as a windows replacement.. i'm a bit lost.
I want to use Word.... so i can use erm... AbiWord of Star Office... hmm, not exactly a good enough replacemnt... and so i find it for everything pretty much. Except my TV card, which is 100% bombproof in rh71 and frequently goes tits up in win98.
Linux generally seems to be a Theoretical OS in many cases. Nice but.. what use is it to me?

And that is what everyone should find out before saying anything unlike some people I have seen, like me likewise, Linux does everything for me, besides my printer which isn't supported as of yet so most likely sooner or later I probably get a new one. But anyways, like acid_kewpie says, "what use is it to me", some people know what is good for them, some don't, at least he knows what works for him with as it seems which is good. if it works, then hey, it works. like me, linux works for me.
I got into Linux because of necessity. I do alot of designing and inventing, and one of my projects requires an extremely stable, fast, configurable, and secure operating system.
Back when I was brainwashed to using M$ Windows NT, I thought that was the best. After all, I really did not have a conparison, and not having even known about other systems out there, I thought this was good.
But then the crashes came, security issues, slow speed, etc. After about 6 months, I got on the web and ran a search for operating systems in Yahoo! Linux came up, along with many others. When I clicked on a site, a large, cute penguin showed up on my screen. That made me reasearch some more. I mean, with a penguin as a mascot, it must be a fun O/S.
After reading more and more, and talking to people, I decided that when I buy my new computer, I will get Linux. So I did.
That was about 1.5 years ago, and now that it is all said and done, Windows 98 is only used for gaming. And that is my only complaint with Linux now. While it is more difficult to administer than Windows 98 or even NT, once you do have it setup, it is not often you need to change it.
Like another person said, Linux is about freedom, and not just choice. You can do almost anything you want, right at the heart of the system. Make it just for you, or create your own distro. Or really learn why a computer works the way it does.
While I really dont think M$ will even lose the battle for the desktop, I think Linux is really the only contender for it.
In reality, I think that Linux is the only thing keeping that jackass company from having it all (besides FreeBSD also, but they dont make to many headlines)
For all of us that love Linux, like what it can do, what we can do with it, and the freedom we have, I really believe we should give serious thanks to Linus Torvalds and the efforts of many talented and wonderful hackers that contribute to this system and its ideals. And of course, lets not leave out Tux, the cutest penguin ever! If it wasnt for him, I may not have even researched Linux further. That is why I even celebrate him. Thanks guys and gals, for everything you do!
I don't usually get involved with these subjects but what the heck I'm bored!
The one thing which I love about Linux, is the open source nature of it. This goes with the Colonel Panic post about Hacking. That I don't do as much I would like, but the fact that I can look at the sourcecode, modify it, adapt it, even improve it (on the rare occasion!), is a personal triumph for me.
But I voted for the Hate Microsoft one. "WHY?" I hear you all cry........or maybe not......but either way, windows is closed source. NO ONE knows what code is executing whilst you have windoze loaded up, except Microsoft employees. That worries me above all.
Also, I don't think that anyone can excuse the price which you have to pay for a copy. That is basically all a windoze distro is, a copy of the master. Maybe the original cost around say £5M, but after that the rest are just copies.
So not just hurray for Linux, but also for Open Source.
