Safe backup ?

Hi All,

Having lost a system and not getting the desired results out of the backup I was using, I'm looking for suggestions on what to use to backup my system when it's up again.

Ideally, I want to be able to install the basics, shove a tape into the drive, reboot after the restore and be back where I was at time of backup. Possible ?

Will using something like tar from "/" backup and restore everything ?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is one of those things that isn't easy to figure out by trial and horror unless you have spare machine lying around.

For those who are familiar with AIX, something like a mksysb would be great !

Thanks in advance,

Justin
