When I am in a terminal window as Root, I I for example today and many other times have written "Make Xconfig" and thenI return, I always get a reply "* no rule to make target * STOP"

This happens on alot of commands.

How can I stop this so I can use the commands in a terminal rather than the GUI

You doing a kernel rebuild? If so did you remember to do cd /usr/src/linux first? It sounds like you are in the wrong dir to me...

Thanks for your reply but I do log into the correct directories but to make sure I went back to Linux after your reply did what you wrote and the same problem both as root and as my user name, under root, when I type in the directories and press the return key, on the left side where the brackets re > there is no way of knowing which directory I am in, but as my user It does show.

I tried all sorts of other directories with all sorrts of other commansds, tried to call up games, utilities, Internet software nothing unless I use GUI.

I want to learn how to use the Terminal commands.

If you're just getting a > prompt then you're probably typing a command in wrong or the prompt isn't being setup for that users profile. How are you becomming root? Using su or by logging on as root. A common cause that makes you end up with a > prompt is doing cd \somedir which is wrong as you're using the DOS style backslash, it should be cd /somedir on *nix. If the prompt doesn't tell you what directory you are in type pwd (print working directory), this will tell you the current directory.

You might also want to post specific examples of the commands you've tried and the thing you're trying to accomplish with those commands. That way we can see where you're going wrong.

just a note... if you're typing "Make Xconfig", then it's not going to work because you need to type "make xconfig".

linux is a stickler about those uppercase letters.

Hi again, well still trouble, I am just experimenting and so it is one BIG learning curve for me but I have tried to type make config in every way with the back slash and forward slash but still no answer the same problem 'make no command' keeps popping up.

I think someone asked what Deamon I am using and after watching the shutting down process it said 'CRON Daemon and SHH Daemon' is this any help.

Sorry if I can't be more cluey on this but all your help is indeed a great help.

Thanks for the all the advice but the strangest thing was that I was realy niffed at thi sproblem and would seem to be ok at solving Win probs so I thought why is this so different so I think I performed a 'self hypnotisim' and tried to look back at when this all started to go wrong and the inly solution is that when I forst got my SuSE 7 box I first copied the original cd's so as not to ruin them but I did install Linux using theoriginal and so everything was fine, I experimented and screwed some things up which is ok, learn from your mistakes I say and so I installed the distro but using the copies had to forget Linux for awhile, (work was being forgotten ) so when I got back to it problems, so yesterday I fdisk the sucker and before you can say 'Microsoft is losing market share' teh original had been installed and hey presto everything works. So far!

Yes all the commands and so could it of been that the copies were CRAP copies and something was missing or corrupted?

Anyway thanks for the advice, what a truly valuable service you proved, no doubt you will probably be hearing from me agin with other problems but I have to say
