font change?

i am running tik, a version of instant messenger. the default font in the program has always been helvetica size 12 (and it still says helvetica size 12 in the prefs). all of the sudden, however, the font style changed - the helvetica font is condensed (is this really helvetica at all?) and i can barely see what i'm typing (the exclamation marks, for examle, don't come out at all!). the font doesn't seem to match any other font i have on my system, as far as i can tell, so i don't get it...

strangely enough, if i run X, for example, from an exported display on another system, the font is normal. it is only on my system where the font is messed up...

has anyone had this font experience within any programs? how is it resolved?
