modem won't hang up

Hmmm... I seem to have one of those modems that won't stop givin'. When I try to disconnect the device in X, I get the message "Failed to Deactivate Device."

Ideas?

what program are you using? kppp, wvdial.. ect?

I'm using Red Hat's PPP Dialer. I use Gnome window system, if that helps at all.

Also, what I just noticed is that the problem ocurred last night when I was logged in as root. This morning when I was logged in as a regular guy, it disconnected fine. I've only been online a few times, so maybe I need to investigate this further. But if you have any ideas in the meantime, that'd be great!
