Hi, I have recently installed Red Hat 7.1 and the installation went fine. When it came to configuring the X Windows stuff (My monitor and card etc.) I just used the ones that the probes suggested because they were correct!
Now, after installation, I boot up the computer and all goes well until I get:
localhost login:
screen. At this point I would put in root and then password but before i get a chance, the screen goes black and flickers!
I have decided (whether this is correct or not is a truly new question!) that this is my X Widows configuration problem. I believe that my refresh rate is set too high (probably 5 instead of 3) and because of this I can't see anything.
Is this correct?
And if it is correct... how on earth do I go about changing it?
(Basically I don't really have a clue!) Thanks!
what runlevel did you tell during the install you wanted? as this i mean did you tell the install you wanted to start out with the graphical X or the beautiful terminal command line?
if you wanted it to have a graphical login, your gonna see for a second the regular black terminal with a login prompt before it flickers to a graphical login to start out in X. if you did however tell it to start out with a graphical login into X, then you need to reconfigure X to get it working. what boot manager are you using, lilo or grub? let us know, we can tell you how to get past this to get this all reconfigured working so you can go about working with the greatest OS. =)
Grrr!
After getting into Xconfigurator, I have run it and found out I... have no idea what the problem is!
I select my monitor and the correct refresh rate. I select the video RAM or whatever it asks for as Xconfigurator finds it to be. I do it all fine and then at the end when I test it... it goes and tells me there is a problem with the setup!
Any ideas??? If not, I'll have to change from Red Hat, probably to Mandrake! Grrr!
Help!
What kind of hardware? Have you checked for any updates or patches.... etc on the www.xfree86.org site for compatibility issues? It might call for a different driver or what not.......
My video card is a 8Mb ATI 3D Rage pro and therefore i am using the 'XF86_Mach64' X server.
That seems to be correctly entered and working.
My monitor is a 'CTX 1451ELR' (Horizontal Sync: 30 - 50. Vertical Sync: 50 - 90)
My monitor isn't in the choices (In XConfigurator) but I am selecting custom and seting my own refresh rates.
Here is the problem message i get when typing startx:
Fatal Server Error:
Caught Signal 11 Server Aborting
and
XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X Server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
It was definately a monitor problem, but I'm still not sure what it was.
I was kinda desperate to get linux up on my computer so I installed Mandrake 8.0 and simply let it configure everything fine and copied the xf86config file when i re-installed Red Hat.
Seems to work fine.
I'm still looking into why that happened though by comparing the two files!
