Question Rh7.1 Fa311

I have used MS OS for years from 3.x to NT4 and am able to get all the things done easily that I need to do. I must admit that Linux is a greater challenge than I ever anticipated. I don’t understand the lingo at all and the threads that I have been reading seem to be upset (at first) with the FA311 NIC and someone suggests a solution to them and all is well again. Well I wish it made since to be but frankly I am a lost ball in high weeds.
I bought the Linux Red Hat 7.1 Bible and the Idiots guide to Linux (Caldera), I have tried to follow the steps in both books to the tee and have had no success in getting my NIC loaded I have a network in my home with 5 PC connected One 30 GB server all playing nicely, I also have a DHCP server on my LAN.
I openly admit my ignorance and beg for help from someone with experience with RH7.1. The drivers from the NetGear manufactured give me a host of errors when I follow their instructions so I went to their web page and downloaded the version that will run with RH 7.1 now it tells me that I have a wrong kernal version, What is that and How do I change it to the right one? It says I need 2.2.14-5.0 I can’t find that anywhere. Please I need Idiots lingo HELP setting up my FA311 card

I don't know if this will help you much but I found this webpage.
http://www.sonnik.com/fa311/

Also I found the kernel that you are looking for, as far as I can tell it was part of the redhat 6.2 distrobution. if you search for kernel at rpmfind.net you will see it at the bottom of the list.

2.2.14-5.0 is a pretty old kernel though, I don't think downgrading is the answer that you are looking for. I checked at redhat and this kernel has security problems...

I hope this helps

I was just looking here too, maybe this page will help you out. I am afraid I don't know a whole lot about the FA311 but I did want to see if I could get you started and warn you about downgrading your kernel.

http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html

BTW, if the netgear site is telling you that you need to downgrade your kernel (it sounds like that is what they are telling you) then they are crazy.

Angry Same errors

Thanks for your help Cinnix but when
#mkdir fa311
copied fa311.c, fa311.h, and makefile into directory
#cd fa311
#make
make:*** no rule to make target 'fa311.c; needed by 'fa311.o' stop

#insmod fa311
using /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/net/fa311.o
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/net/fa311.o:kernel-module mismatch
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/net/fa311.o was compiled for version 2.2.14-5.o

Does anyone know what all this means?

don't know for sure but I would say it means the following:

your fa311 was originally written for Kernel v2.2.14-5 and the .o doesn't know how to deal with the later Kernel you are running.

I suggest trying to get a later driver!

2.4

I'd suggest simply upgrading to kernel 2.4 and then make sure to include "National Semiconductor" in xconfig and it will work. I have the same NIC running on RH 7.1 with kernel 2.4.7 like this.
