Firewall... SuSE 7.1...Hotmail

hello all, here is my situation:

My firewall is working...sort of...I still get an error at boot up that says firewall is a failed service in run level 5. So I manually do firewall stop, then firewall start.
When I stop it, I get this:

Remove filter rules and disable IP forwarding.....
clearing rules now......Done

Notice that there is no Done after the first line..... When I try to check my firewall for open ports, I get the message:
cannot run IP:No such file or directory
' ' ' ' 2 more times.....

I do however get a long list of ports and stuff when I run ipchains -L -nv
I have been trying like crazy to get stuff working, I know that kernel 2.4 uses iptables, and I found the modules for it in an ipv6 directory.... should I install all of them?? But then how do I set up my firewall to use them and not ipchains??

ALso, I cannot login to hotmail from behind the firewall, I have port 443 open, which should allow SSL connections, so I'm not sure what to do about that.

Any suggestions would be great

THANKS

Post Firewall

I use SuSE 7.2 and had a lot of trouble getting a good result from my firewall. Eventually i got it up but now i find using Webmin with a ipchains Module is much easier faster etc etc..
Both of these can be downloaded from the net
Webmin from
www.webmin.com
and heaps of modules from
http://ftp.ru.xemacs.org/pub/unix/admin/webmin/modules/

hope this helps
Marty

Thanks marty...

I figured out the hotmail thing, I wasn't masquing everything internally, got it now though.

As for the error messages, I'm still working on it.....

I still can't figure out why i'm using ipchains if i have kernel2.4

The SuSEfirewall script uses ipchains, but it will only work if you use the ipchains_compat in the 2.4.x kernel. You can use iptables if you want, but SuSE has no nifty scripts to automagically coach you through it.
