hey everybody, I am definitely a newbie and i ned HELP.
I have a few questions first one to come to mind is when i set up my internet it doesnt connect to the internt i put al the account info in right but it stil doesnt work. 2nd once i get everything installed btw that is the only thing wrong in the install. it goes to the login screen but doesnt give me time to login then it goes directly to a black screen that i can not do anything with. there isnt a prompt of any kind and the only way to get out of it is to restart my computer by (i know this is not a good idea) unplugging the computer anywayi have looked through most of the posts and havent found any help on this. please help

if it helps any i got my copy of mandrake from linux2order ( trying to save some money) i think maybe i got a corupt copy

sounds to me you need to reconfigure X, it seems as if you setup your box to boot up into runlevel 5, you need to change this to runlevel 3 in your inittab file. once your then at the command prompt, try running Xconfigurator to get X working, any problems in doing so .... check out www.xfree86.org for info on your video and monitor and checking if its compatible or not. If you don't know how to change your runlevel.. at the lilo prompt, type linux 3 or if you boot up, you can switch terminals to get to a login prompt with ctrl-alt-F1 thru F6, or can ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X windows session.
your modem sounds like it needs to be reconfigured too.. what kind of modem is it? is a winmodem.... ? goto www.linmodems.org to find out if yours is or not.... and if its not then try reading the howto's on modems at www.linuxdoc.org to get you started.

ok i will try that in the morning after i have a few hourse sleep. that is if i can understand it lol i was just wondering if it would be posible to speak in more english. if it would lose in the translation i understand. or maybe someone could point me to a linux to english translator lol. well i will be checkin back in in the morning

ok i didnt get any sleep but i re-read ur reply to my q a couple more times lol and it does make a lil sense. I still would like to know if there is a way to learn all the lingo. I know what newbies to windows fel like now when i help them with their system lol i guess i forgot what it is like to be a newby. well I am off for now have a wonderful day all

I can't say that I've seen any really good lists, you might want to look at http://tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/index.html however this is general hacker/geek/*nix/vms/tops(!) jargon, some of which is really old now, but can still be a funny read. I especially like the sound of the space-cadet keyboard
