I am aware that there is a previous post similar to this one, however my problem is slightly different. When I try to log onto my system, I don't get a password prompt after entering my username. I don't get any type of message, the cursor just blinks and the username prompt resets. When I try to telnet in I don't even get a username prompt, just the Kernel version, and then I lose the connection. I tried booting with the help of a rescue disk, same problem. So basically I can't get into my system, except through FTP (which I can't do as root so I'm stuck). I haven't installed/uninstalled anything recently... it just started happening??? Any ideas/help would be MUCH appreciated, thanks.

What type of log messages are generated from your loging attempts?

I've started linux in single user mode... In /var/log/messages there's nothing about my login attempts, except for my ftp sessions. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

just to let you know...
After narrowing down the problem, I was able to ftp the login program (/bin/login) from a working machine to overwrite mine, which somehow got corrupted. Now everything seems to be working fine.
If I didn't have another machine to work from, does anyone know if I could have somehow recompiled just the login program from the source somehow?
No longer urgent, just curious.
