I surely could use some help. I have just installed linux-mandrake verson 7.1 on to a 550mhz Pentium machine that also has a partition with Windows 98 2nd edition on it. I have it networked (with Win98) to another Win98 machine (600mhz Pentium, Win98 2nd Ed).
The networking works with the two machine booted in Win98 but when I take the machine with Linux on it, boot to linux and try to network, I can not get a ping from the Win98 to Linux or reversed. Here are the settings:
600 Mhz Win98 machine (with SMC EZ Card SMC1211TX installed)
Computer name: Master
Workgroup: mydomain.com
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
550Mhx machine (with RTL8139 PCI NIC installed)

When both are booted as Win98 machines I can see them both in Network Neighborhood and can ping both ways using DOS.
Now, when booting the 550Mhz machine under Linux-Mandrake 7.1 with the following configuration:
Under DrakConf - Linuxconf - Networking - Basic host info I have:
Host name + domain: linuxbox.mydomain.com
Under Adapter 1 I have: (config mode is manual and enabled)
Primary name and domain: linuxbox.mydomain.com
Aliasas: linuxbox
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Netmast: 255.255.255.0
Net device: eth0
Kernal module rtl8139
(all else blank)
Under Network Configurator - misc - about other host I have the following:
IP Number | Name | Alias
192.168.0.1 | linuxbox.mydomain.com | linuxbox
127.0.0.1 | localhost |
192.068.0.2 | winbox.mydomain.com | winbox
I should also say the during linux boot I do get OK in the following:
Setting up network parameters OK
Setting up interface lo OK
Setting up interface eth0 OK
Also, under DrakConf - Hardware Configurator - this NIC is installed as:
Realtek Semiconductor Co., LTD 8139
and comes up with a WARNING It seems that your network card is already configured
and the I/O and IRQ windows have -1 in them. So it looks like the system likes the card.
and the following file info:
/etc/host.allow has the following entry:
ALL:192.168.0.1
ALL:192.168.0.2
/etc/host.deny has the following entry:
ALL:ALL
Here is what I get when I ping from the linux machine:
Ping 192.168.0.2
ping: sent to: Network is unreachable
ping wrote 192.168.0.2 64 chars, ret= -1
Ping 192.168.0.1 (itself)
ping: 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_secq0 ttl=255 time=0.1 ms

I also tried installing a SMC EZ Card SMC1211TX which installed ok in win98 (and worked) and ok in linux but did not work (on the network) I also could not get rid of the rtl8139 on the Kernal module line when the SMCX1211TX was installed, I would remove it from the line but on reboot it would come back. So when back to the rtl8139 card. So basically both cards installed ok in linux and win98 but only worked on the network in Win98. So I assume I am doing something wrong in setting up the linux configuration for the network.

OK that's it. I hope I have given enough info so someone can help me figure out what I am doing wrong.
It should be obvious by now that I am a newbie at linux. I have been wanting to load it on one of my systems for over a year now and finally found time (and the courage).. I am eager to learn more about Linux and want to have this box be my Linux server. I also have a new SMC 9334 dual NIC that I want to get running on it since there are no drivers for Win98 for it.

12/29/00 I removed the rt8139 and installed the SMC 9334 dual port NIC and now can ping in both directions. Working on SaMBa now. Got SaMBa installed and can see samba server from the Win98 machine but can not log in to linux machine from Win98 because of password problem (I think).. Did not set up one in samba. But can read Win98 files from linux using the Win98 network login username and password. Now sure what to do next.
