Question

Hi Folks,

I have an old machine (486SX, 64MB RAM 400MB HDD no CD Drive) and would like to resurect it with Linux. I am a newbie and have the following questions. I would just want a CLI (no desk tops) and may think about using it as a firewall/router at a later date.

Is installing from Floppy a good idea/possible?

If so which distro woud be good?

Can I install from an Ethernet from an existing linux machine (bearing in mind I am pretty stupid)?

Is it worth 'lending' the machine a CD drive just for the install?

Any ideas would be great so I can start reading the relevant stuff.

Cheers

Mike

You can still install Slackware from floppies, but I don't think you'd want to! As for the ethernet install, yeah - just about all distros support this one. Slackware via NFS, Redhat does NFS and FTP installs. Dunno about the others. Have a look on http://www.linuxdocs.org for relevant HOWTOs.

Personally I would 'lend' the machine the CD-ROM as you put it. Probably be the fastest route at the end of the day. With the HDD size I would look into one of the distros that is very compact, say Peanut Linux, but there are others...

HTH

Jamie...

PS As its an old machine it probably won't support booting from the CD so remember to make your boot disk(s).
