This forum is AWESOME! Got GREAT help from it! Anywayz, let me be brief:
I am a newbie to linux and have a AMD system (details below) and wanna multiboot with Win98SE, Win2K server, Linux RH7. Have a problem with linux to recognize my one and only harddrive (maxtor 30gb) running on Asus A7V Promise ATA100 (onboard).
I found a solution for RH6.2 at
http://www.geocities.com/ender7007
which also works for RH7.0 as well, so go take a look!
And for those who are curious bout how a newbie like me did it, details are as follows:
System:
AMD Athlon 800, 384 PC133, Asus A7V (Promise ATA100 onboard), maxtor 30gb, Asus GTS GeForce2 32mb, sound card, network card, ms optical mouse, cd rom (primary slave)
OS:
Already setup dual boot with Win98SE & Win2k server
wanna install Linux Red Hat 7.0
3rd party software used:
-Powerquest Partition Magic Pro 6.0
(to create and format ext2 native and swap for linux as I am not familiar with linux fdisk)
-Powerquest Boot Magic
(if you know how lilo works in detail, could do it without boot magic)
Notes added to the url mentioned above:
-Follow exactly that url tells you. Don't worry bout the difference in the I/O addresses, coz mine is different from his, too.
-I used text mode instead of graphic mode
-Remember NOT to choose linear mode, or else u have to modify your lilo.conf to change "linear" to "lba32" (lilo.conf located in /etc) and compiled it again (run lilo in /sbin)
-you could append that line (ide2=xxxxxx) while doing the installation process (sorry that I forgot where the prompt is during the process, should be around where it asks for the linear mode thing)
-I didn't bother to modify more to run linux at ata100 speed though
REMEMBER to create boot disk in Linux!
(for me, I used boot magic afterwards to choose to boot to which partition; while ppl using lilo, they should be able to config lilo.conf to do multiboot, I think)
Sorry for this loooong msg, hope it helps...
