Thumbs up a great big thanks to CRAGSTAR

Hi crag
My name is phil and I live in Paris France
Im not sure if you remember me but around about a fortnight ago you tried
to help me set up my matrox g450
with linux mandrake.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...?threadid=1853
i couldnt set up the matrox card and i decided to wait for
RH 7.1 .
we allso chatted on icq <my No 61452438> for a while and you were a great great help .

Well I just wanted to let you know that I downloaded the 2 ISO red hat ver 7.1 files <seawolf i386 disc1 and 2>
from the red hat site ( about 20 hrs for both)
I burned my cd's fired up the pc and there I was all set to go .It was a great install
< i even repeated it twice to do the complete instal .>
I was happy as a kid during the instalation process as I had both screens running, but soon as I
loaded KDE it went away :-(
LoL I really dont care for now though

I am concentrating on getting familiar with my new OS,
the directories, where all the things are etc etc .
I dont want to start asking you questions as its a real big shopping list <<and all the
information is on the web and in these forums >>
BUT
i will have to set up my priorities and proceed down the list .Its a bit like when i
discovered win3 and dos5.0 but this is much much better.
Im set up right now with red hat 7.1 on a fresh drive on my main machine in front of
me which is sitting next to my win9x this is my 192.168.0.1 wingate server hooked up to
the cable so I can brows the FAQ's and forums with the winx macine
whilst working real time on
the RH pc.
i can connect to the web with a modem and get my mail using netscape , but as you can imagine i want to connect up to the wingate server PC on my LAN for the faster cable connection.
for this I have yet to be able to configure the LAN with Linux and Win and at present im in a bit off a muddle .
I think I need samba to see the windows files
and TCP/IP for the web connection ..Im checking it out some things work but not all ....

But im afraid I got of to a bad start with seeking help again here on the forum

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...?threadid=2319
could you advise me the best way to get help some people get a lot of response and some things just get ignored ..LIKE "HELP ME PLEASE"
:-D

so ill maybe try to cool down a bit and ask less at the time and be more precise... You rekon ??
:-)
I dont want to swamp the server with questions so ill take it easy and read other peoples
problemes allso
ANYWAY a great big thank you and BRAVO Linus Thorvald and all these people who have been working
from the begining on this truely great project. I say its one of the main achievments of modern times and it should be an example of how man should live, based on sharing knowledge and material "no man is an island".
I hope one day that ill be able to contribute

regards and thanks phil

Unhappy I'm glad that my ramblings made sense!

Hi Phil75 - I am gald that the RedHat install went better, I knew that it would but again it is good to see that you have had some success.

However with regards to your Network problem I am afraid that I cannot help you directly because I do not have any knowledge of Linux networking. Becasue I am trying to get my PCtel Driver working for my modem so I can dial out with Linux - I have not used Linux for any other networking means.

What I would say is to go to http://www.linuxdocs.org and look for the networking How-to or a Samba How-to. These will give you step by step guides to getting most networky things going, and other How-to's have provided me with countless number of info and advice.

There are a number of networking specialists in the forums so try contacting some of them.

I'm sorry that I cannot help anymore.

Wink greetings

Thanks for your reply

I am gathering all the docs I can like you sugest for the networking stuff AND theres heaps of it. I got all the PDF files from the RH site............back to school
After looking at samba.conf I have decided to ..... put aside the the technical networking stuff for now and do some simple html and related activities in RH.

At present I can dial up to the Internet with a modem / use my printer / and transfer my windows files via a CD this is not so bad .I can open up current projects now in linux, create dir's and find them again .
The gimp opens photoshop and fireworks files with all the layers intact ..remarkable
and my gilfreind has discovered all the card games :-D

BUT

< no HOMESITE or ULTRAEDIT in linux !!! > let alone DREAMWEAVER .
Is there any advanced html editor ressembling those apps??

MY BIGGEST SURPRISE was that
I noticed a lot of sites under linux/netscape simply dont work . strange reaction to style sheets java script and texte formating/alignments GB images simply not there etc etc

what a big laugh .

I rekon maybe around 30% of the sites wont work as soon as they are not on a windows IE4/5 platform
This is my biggest discovery here and its been worthwhile to instal linux just to notice this

thanks again
phil

You may want to try some other web browsers, especially seeing as netscape has a Linux problem anyway (something todo with continually losing memory). There is opera, konquerer and the new netscape to think off hand, but I am sure that there are loads more.

You can always use Wine and try to get Dreamweaver or anything to work. I use vi or any text editor for my html needs.
Oh the problem with some sites that don't work is that most are built with Microsoft so called technology that aren't icann or w3 supported yet. So only IE will render those pages.

Unhappy OS compatibility

I noticed especially that problems are with css .
I included the 4 modes for href links in my text formating styl sheet. class="text"

under windows IE5 it works fine
under netscape the text is formated but the links dont change when you pass over them

AND with netscape linux the WHOLE TEXTE changes state like it was all a href link
LOL
I make my CSS in an app called topstyle .It has a direct link to the http://www.org to check them and they pass ok ??

I am not so advanced with html editing and i need to have the basic tags and maybe tag options like in home site .
For this I downloaded quanta .
It was my first attempt at compiling a program.
I followed the instructions.
but I did not know where to place
the extracted tar folder " QUANTA" so I put it here : root/usr/etc

I "cd" to the said directory
typed in './configure' < a whole load of text scrolled by>
I then typed 'make' more txt scrolling by
followed by 'make install' and 'make clean' .
it all seemed ok but when I click on the " desk top icon"
<<this must be the program launcher right ? >>
I get "program not found"

I will go on the quanta site and see what I can find

thanks for all your comments
phil

What about starting the program from the command line, does it give you the same error as the desktop icon?

Yeah, usually where ever you installed or untarred the package of the program to its own directory. It should reside there. If you untarred quanta in lets say /root/etc/ then there should be a directory with /etc called quanta or something like that, whatever it was named when you downloaded it.

Hi trickykid and crag
Hows it going ??
Im still hanging in there
:-)

sure the quanta folder is there
but I spent half the night trying to get it running .
im starting to think that it might not run on RH7.1
This is a pain as I need some kind of html editor with the basic tags.. what about 'coffe cup' ??

I had a great surprise with star office WOW !
it opens word offics 2000 files This is so typical when you considerthat office 97 wont open them unless you save them in a special format. This is a very good office suite.

Jesus Iv got to get this linux thing happening here but I know Im not going to learn it in a day but still Im not dumb
and I'm still a windows techie (super user on www.nowonder.com) for all the good that does me now.
But I have to stay productive here..

I think that using the kde file manager and kde in general doesnt give me a good notion on the Linux file structure.

Im used to launching win apps through the command line ive been doing it since dos

Its obvious that the reason quanta dont work is that some of the files are not in the right place ..

any suggetions on getting to master the linux file stucture

Its obvious that what is happening with quanta is that some files are not in the right place AND now I have installed it twice in different location
can i just delete the folders
Unzip the tarbal to the right directory < which one >
and do it again from there .

I am allso on the source forge forum but not many people go through there and they are pretty advanced with php mysql etc etc

SO SO
when this step is over
I will need to install my usb agfa snap scan
and usb web cam

and maybe try to figure out why i only have 1 screen running on my G450

I am not convinced that my ULTRA 100 is functioning as
my Win 98 set up seems to be faster then RH 1

thanks all
phil
