Rpm Errors!!

I'm running Mandrake 7.0, I try to install rpm's and get the error msg that this version of rpm doesn't support rpm's with major #'s <= than 3.
the version of rpm I have is 3.0.3
Do I need to upgrade the package manager or what?
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Pretty sure.........

.......it's not very practical to try to upgrade something as old as 7.0 Better to install 8.0 I don't think anyone is going to work on making the new stuff run on the old releases.

There' a related story on MandrakeForum:

I upgraded rpm to 3.0.6 with my 2.2.5 kernel and it fixed this problem.

remember to rpm --rebuiddb after the upgrade
