I've finished compiling 2.4.1 for the express reason of getting my ppp services to work. I made sure that I had selected Networking support, TCP/IP, etc., during configuration.

Yet when I boot the system and then try to connect to my ISP, it immediately disconnects. My logs state that the pppd died immediately and suggest doing a 'modprobe -v pppd'. Results-- "not found".

Did I miss something obvious? Or maybe something not so obvious?

My steps between compile and attempting to connect were setting up my dialup configuration and using kppp to enter all of the settings. Nothing else so far.

Try This...

As root do "mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0"

This got my system to admit I had compilied PPP support into the kernel (but my PPP still doesn't work). Let me know if this works (and then maybe you can help me

Did you add support for ppp under "Network device support"?

The mknod command only makes a device-file, it's like a symbolic link or handle to the device.

Rimmer: What's your error messages?

Here is my Error Message

This is taken from the end of /var/log/messages:

ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/ttyS2 at 38400
pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
using interface ppp0
local IP address 10.64.64.64
remote IP address 10.112.112.112
terminating on signal 15
Exit
modprobe: can't locate module ppp0

I'm running RedHat 7.0 with kernel 2.4.2. PPP stuff is all compiled into the kernel (ie not as modules). I've upgraded PPP and modutils (to meet the requirements in the ppp section of /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes). I don't understand what modprobe is... I thought it loaded kernel modules (but ppp0 is not a kernel module). I've updated a few other packages (as instructed to in the documentation with the new kernel). Let me know if you need a complete list. Any help would be greatly appreciated
