I'm always wondering what the best version of linux is for me, I have tryed Mandrake 7.1 and I will be getting red hat very soon, I have a cable modem(two-way adelphia) that uses a kingston intel NIC, In Mandrake I had problems getting my cable modem to work(I used the tulip driver). Does any version of linux have better support for my NIC? Also my other question is I have a i815 motherboard with my Celeron II(1012mhz),(intels newest chipset) do I need a special patch or driver?(I do in windows). my system is:
Celeron II 600@1012mhz(9x112)
Abit SE6 i815 motherboard
128mb pc133 cas2 sdram
15gb ATA100 7,200 RPM harddrive
voodoo3 3000
kingston network card with intel chipset(in cnr slot)
intergrated sound (sound is good with this board) if it doesn't work in linux i will use my ESS Soundcard
40x plextor cdrom(scsi)
8/20 plextor CDR(scsi)
Q500 in-win case 300w
POS 15" Monitor (until i get my 19" optiquest back)
well thats my system

The best Linux distro is really a matter of opinion/taste. You can see my opinion of the various distos here - http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...adid=22#post59 (Note that Debian has since released a new version).
You may want to consider Gentus (http://www.gentus.com), which is not mentioned in the aforementioned post. Gentus is actually put out by Abit, and from what I hear, if you have an Abit board Gentus in not a bad option. It actually installs a custom kernel depending on what board you have (it would also be the most likely to support the integrated sound). For full i815 support I THINK you will need either >2.2.17 or a 2.4.x kernel.
