By default you cannot telnet into a box as root (this is a very bad thing to do anyway). You can login as a regular user and then su to root. If at all possible you should drop telnet and use ssh.
Thanks Jeremy.... that made sense so I said to myself, "time to learn how to add a user". Went out and found a doc on that and now I can successfully telnet into the Linux box from elsewhere on the network...
Yay!
Now that I can add user I'd love to give it a name.... that's not so easy to find. Right now I have to specify the IP address in order to telnet...
I meant the hostname but I figured it out.... just type
hostname [desired hostname]
... couldn't be easier.
I've since loaded RedHat 7.0 on a similar machine and must say I am very impressed. I never got the GUI working under 5.2 so I'm thinking I might just upgrade it so both my boxes are ReHat 7.0...
