My old CD-ROM drive just died. I'm looking for something fairly inexpensive yet reliable. Speed probably needs to be at least 32X. Are there any types that should be avoided, or are all new drives generally ATAPI compliant? I'm pretty clueless in this area... I was hoping you guys could tell me if there are particular types or brands I should avoid (ie stuff that Linux won't like)? Basically any information would be appreciated

What is E-IDE?

I was looking around town today. I noticed that some of the cheaper drives said they had an E-IDE interface. Is this different then an ATAPI interface? These same drives all seemed to say that Windows or DOS were required (but then so did some that specifically mentioned ATAPI).

I only use Creative CD ROM dirves myself. They are not too expensive (try and buy an OEM item if you can). Unless the store is really trying to take customers to the bank, you should not have to pay more than about $50.00 for a 52x drive.

Go to pricegrabber.com and look to get a good idea as to what drives are going for. Pricewatch.com is good, but you really need to go about 4 or 5 pages into the area you are shopping for to get accurate prices on good hardware.
