Hi
Kernel compile is difficult to grasp, but once you've sussed it, it's easy. Read this.....

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html

Have "fun"

In regards to compiling the kernel, I followed the instruction included in the file the first time I upgraded. It's by far one of the best documents I've read, the directions are simple and clear. You'll find the README file in the linux directory when you unpack the file.

Make sure you don't unpack the file into the /usr/src directory to compile it. This is where some of your current kernel headers might be stored, and can hinder future compiling of other programs. (You're kernel headers should match with the kernel you boot from. This wasn't explained completely to me the first time, but i makes sense.)

Good luck and dig in.
