I can't detect my monitor with Xconfigurator.
My spec ...
1. Redhat 6.2
2. DELL E550 Monitor
3. Intel(R) 810e Chipset Graphics Driver

Step i've tried ...
1. Choose "custom" after Xconfigurator detected my vga card.
2. Choose
"Non-Interlaced SVGA, 1024x768 @ 60 Hz, 800x600 @ 72 Hz"
3. Choose "50-70"
4. Choose "4mb"
5. Choose "No Clockchip Setting (recommended)"
6. Choose "16-bit (800x600 mode)

The same settings applied to Generic Monitor and Sync.
but it's not working ...

Have you tried any of the Dell monitor selections? One of those might be a compatible, and or have you tried several other generic setups, usually in these type of cases, you just have to work it up and one by one test diferent configurations.

I am having a similar problem as yours. I entered the info like you did and then it tries to test the settings. Sometimes, depending on what I enter, it will bring a GUI and test it. It will ask whether I can see the message (gets weird here) - if I answer yes there is no problem and the settings are accepted but if I let it time out it reports the settings are incorrect and forces me to re-enter. Once I get it all set and actually try to enter startx it displays in a manner that is very difficult to read and won't allow to to adjust using the crtl+alt+(+). Going to keep trying different combinations. Was hoping somebody already did this though.
