OK, if it's original Compaq equip, it's a winmodem, of a particularily nasty type, and will NEVER work in Linux, no matter what drivers you try for it.
Even if it has Rockwell chips, or Lucent, it's actually BUILT by Comcrap, and just won't work. It's so proprietary, it won't even work in any other system. It wll ONLY work in THAT model, with Compaq's drivers.
I'll eat my hat if anyone can find a Linux driver for THAT modem, and successfully get it working.
The original poster did not specify any 3rd party modem, thus my assumption.
